What is homeopathy? It is a unique form of medicine that uses minute amounts of pharmaceutically prepared substances from plants, animals and minerals. It embraces the idea that all of us have a vital force within us that guides our growth and healing. This vital force if strong, keeps our body healthy while a weak one allows diseases and disorders to develop. Homeopathic medicines simply strengthen this vital force so healing can occur, working with the body and mind to support our intrinsic momentum toward balance and health.
The best way to learn homeopathy is to experience it directly. When setting up or buying a homeopathic first aid kit, it’s important that you are familiar and know the uses with the remedies it contains. What are remedies and How to Choose Them? Homeopathic medicines or remedies derive from natural substance-minerals, animals and plants. Each source is repeatedly diluted and shaken in a solution, in a process called “potentization”. Homeopaths prescribe a remedy based purely on the patient’s experience of the disease state. Homeopaths look for the way this particular imbalanced state affects the patient, and that lead them to a remedy that supports the patient healing process. The frequency with which a patient takes a homeopathic remedy varies with the intensity of the symptoms and response to the treatment. Yet, homeopathy has no side effects. It is safe, gentle, and quite inexpensive. The only drawback is that it takes some self education in order to treat emergencies with assuredness. Here are some of the remedies homeopaths use all the time. You can keep your medicine cabinet stocked with these remedies for a universal first aid kit. Aconitum napellus This remedy is great for shock but only for the obviously panicky shock. The remedy should be given as soon as possible in as high a potency as possible. It is also best for illnesses like cold, flu, sore throats, earache, urinary tract infection, fever, and chicken pox. Apis Mellifica For bee or wasp stings, and any allergic reaction to a bite or sting which cause swelling, redness and pain. Apis can also be used for sore throats and swollen joints or any type of acute inflammation that is characterized by stinging, burning, redness and swelling . Arnica Montana This is the classic remedy for trauma, injury and bruising. It helps to stop bleeding, aids in the healing of wounds and reduces bruising and swelling. Cantharis Vesicatoria The #1 remedy for bladder infections can also be used for burns, when there is violent burning pain and blisters. Hypericum perforatum Remedy for injuries to nerve-rich areas, like stubbed toe, a finger slammed in the door with characteristic “nerve” pain. Often used with Arnica. Ledum Palustre Remedy for animal bites and puncture wounds. This remedy prevents s infection. Alternate it with Hypericum if the wound is painful. Nux Vomica This remedy can be a life-saver in the case of hangover. This remedy can also be helpful for digestive problems and for nausea during pregnancy. Rhus Toxicondendron Remedy for strains and sprains of muscles and tendons. This remedy can also be useful for respiratory complaints, hives and itching skin. Can be an excellent remedy for poison ivy or poison oak. Ruta Graveolens Remedy for injuries to the cartilages, tendons, outer covering of bones and ligaments. Ruta is also useful for injuries to the eye due to cover-use or strain. Silicea Terra This remedy can sometimes be effective in encouraging splinters to be expelled. There are many more remedies to choose from, but hopefully this will give you a good little starter kit.
