There are two modes of Son Buddhist meditation: Quiet and Active. Quiet meditation refers to traditional seated meditation while Active meditation refers to meditating while standing or in motion. Among the thousands of forms of Chi-Kung and Taoist Meditation, Active meditation is one of the most simple and potentially most powerful.

Active meditation is considered more advanced because you don’t have to set aside a special time and place to meditate. It is also superior for aligning the meridians and chakras and for flow of energy. Another great benefit is that once you have mastered being able to meditate wherever you may be, you can begin to use meditation as a therapeutic coping mechanism to recover from unexpected surprises and a method of improving your way of communicating and behaving. Active meditation is both healing and empowering.

Method of Meditating in a Standing Position
  • Find a quiet pleasant place to practice. Stand straight with your feet shoulder width apart and parallel to one another.
  • Pay close attention to the bottoms of your feet. Imagine that the bottom of each foot is a rectangle divided into four quadrants. Make sure that your weight is evenly spread across the bottom of your feet to create that physical and mental sensation that people call centered.
  • Lift up and spread your toes as much as you can. Feel the contact that your toe pads make with the floor. Set them down again and imagine that bottom of your feet are stretched to their maximum width and length.
  • You are now grounded.
  • Straighten your spine to its maximum length. Stand tall like a tree and feel your mind shift into a mere expansive, peaceful and confident mindset.
  • Look forward, with your head aligned right on top of your spine, so the muscles of your face, head, neck and throat can be relaxed. Gently place the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth.
  • Hold your left hand in your right hand and placed both hands on your abdomen. Let your fingers be extended, with space between them, and your elbows be slightly lifted, so your armpits feel hollow.
  • Take a couple of deep inhales and complete exhalations. Then let your breath return to its natural rhythm, and come to a place of stillness in your physical body.
  • Hold this position for ten minutes or longer.

As you practice Active meditation you develop a greater kinesthetic awareness of your body. You begin to notice the sensations of living more. Physical stimuli and emotions feel fresher and realer. It is a good practice for those people who are having trouble keeping the mind alert or even staying awake. It adds a little vitality and vigor to our meditation.

Mastering the Active meditation is the first step in being able to incorporate meditation into our daily lives. This releases blocks of tension and strengthens your core muscles, allowing your energy to flow freely. When you meditate before you engage on something, you’ll be surprised at how confident, expansive and generous you feel. Active meditation improves core strength, balance, bone density, power, awareness, sleep quality, body alignment, efficiency of movements and mind-body connection.

Active meditation endows us with the capacity to inject moments of clarity and sanity, common sense and love into the never-ending blur of activity in our daily lives. The Active meditation is used not only to make healthy people more so, but in China it is used in some hospitals to help heal various illnesses. Try this exercise at home, at work, or even in the check-out line. There is no limit to benefits you could have from this simple exercise.
